Formative Assessment Using Different Digital Tools

Assessments have always been an integral part of teaching and learning. Formative assessment monitors student learning. They are used during instruction rather than at the end of a unit. This provides valuable feedback that helps adjust ongoing teaching and learning strategies. Students are hence better equipped to attain the required learning target/goals.

With technology becoming an integral part of our education system, they are many digital assessment tools available. I have used Go formative and Quizizz to create 2 such assessments. Both these platforms were easy to use. Not only we could use our own questions, we could also tap into the premade questions already available. The advantage of these assessment is that they give immediate feedback to both the students and the teacher.

Sample lesson plan and formative assessments

The students are learning how to manipulate a linear equation to slope intercept form and graph the line in this form. In order to do this the students will be equipped with the following learning experiences -
1. Students are retaught the three forms of linear equations (Standard, Point-Slope, and Slope Intercept). They will able to identify the slope and y-intercept in any form of equation. They will be able to manipulate one form of equation to another.
2. Given y-intercept and slope, students learn how to plot the next point and draw the line.

There will be formative assessments given after each learning experience. Since each learning experience is directly related to the one above it, it is critical that the students have thorough understanding of what they are learning. These formative assessments are geared towards helping the teacher understand whether the students have grasped the concept and if he/she can move on to the next concept. Based on the results. The teacher either might have to reteach the concept to the whole class or identify students who might need a bit more help and provide them with some small group instruction or one on one instruction.
