The way a topic is introduced plays an important role as they provide a first impression and prepare the audience for the information they are about to gain. They are also a means to “sell” a topic. Students helping other students learn is a powerful classroom technique. This approach is already in use during collaborative projects. Students teaching students not only benefit those students who are being taught, but it also benefits the students who are teaching.
High school students have been given an opportunity to
introduce a new mathematical concept to 4th and 5th graders. They will use a
tech tool such as GoAnimate, PhotoStory, Animoto, Adobe Spark or others to
create a 7 - 10 minute video presentation for the introduction. The students
can create their own story line for the introduction or use a storyline from a
book/video.
With the use of technology in education on the rise, the idea
behind this project is to help the students (high schoolers) work on their tech
skills and at the same time strengthen their basic math concepts. The criteria
used while creating the rubric is based on how a student researches the
project, chose images, and organizes their information. It also includes how
they worked on the technical aspects like incorporating voice, captions,
graphics, soundtracks etc. I have used Rubistar to create the
online rubric. It was an easy tool to use. This rubric is supposed to guide the students as they work on the project. It helps them keep track of what is expected from the project. It helps the teacher monitor the students' progress and develop and refine lesson plans.
