Genius Hour Week 7 - Reflection

It is now time to put together all the individual parts and paint. Using super glue, attach the balsa wood, the 8” mdf circle and the stand alone 8 by 12 clay project to the main board.

Give a couple of coats with white interior semi gloss enamel. Leave it overnight to dry completely.
Thin yellow ochre oil paint with turpenoid and apply completely onto the board. Immediately wipe it down with a lint free cloth. This gives an ivory look. It is not easy to wipe off paint from balsa foam.
Finally managed to get my daughter take a picture of me working.
Next, I highlighted the balsa wood with burnt sienna, white and gold. Since I wanted the royal couple to be of darker shade, I repainted it with thinned burntsienna and wiped it down immediately. I painted the left over parts with burnt umber. Spray a couple of coats of varnish to protect the painting.

Finally, glue the mirror and enamel project to the main board using super glue.

This has been a challenging and tiring project, but I enjoyed every minute of it. What would I change if I were to redo this project - paint the balsa foam Buddha grey to give it a stone look and enhance it with some silver/gold paint. Maybe add some colors to the clay parts of the project instead of keeping it monotone (wish I had listened to my daughter and added some color for this project before sealing it with varnish). Will I take up something like this again - definitely. I may not do a 5 in one mural, but am definitely game to work on the individual pieces by themselves. Glass Painting and Balsa Foam carving are on the top of my list to try again. I am looking forward to trying some modern designs. What I would take back to my students - hardwork and perseverance pays. Never give up. The satisfaction you get when you achieve your goal is tremendous.
