This week decided to work on 3D Foam Carving. The material used is balsa foam. Balsa Foam is the amazing plastic foam that carves like butter and paints like wood. It's ideal for sculpting and model making because it can be carved, chiseled, sawed, textured, or embossed with traditional and non-traditional hand tools. You can create detailed shapes by simply pressing any object into the surface.

Key learnings this week -
- Balsa foam has to be handled gently. It easily dents.
- Popsicle sticks can be easily converted to usable tools
- Mistakes cannot be rectified. We have to work around them
- Have a face mask handy while working with balsa as it creates a lot of dust.
- It is best to work in the garage and not inside the house due to dust

I must say, you are very impressive! I'm curious how long you worked on this piece, and where will you put it?
ReplyDeleteThis particular piece wasn't as difficult as I expected it to be. It took me a week (give or take 10 hours) to complete it.
DeleteSudha,
ReplyDeleteThese creations are awesome! Seems like you have also learned a lot of new things this week. Very cool how the popsicle sticks can be easily made into tools. I did not realize that. I can imagine it being a lot easier to work in the garage rather than in the inside of the house due to the dust! CAn't wait to see more of your collections!
Sudha,
ReplyDeleteI think you've gotten more out of this passion project than anyone else! It is amazing what you have been able to create. I have used Balsa wood in summer STEM camp with kids but not Balsa foam. Sounds interesting! It must be difficult that you can't fix any mistakes, you just have to work around it. Are all the projects you create for yourself? Have you given any as gifts? If so, what are the reactions? Keep up the great work!
